Ten Years of SEAMS (from the Southeast Asian Bulletin f Mathematics 7 (1983), pp 10-15)

by Prof Lee Peng Yee (SEAMS President, 1981-82)

Our Society was formed in 1972. It was the result of a Southeast Asian tour by our founding president Professor Wong Yung Chow of the University of Hong Kong. With the support of the mathematicians in the region, the inaugural meeting of the Society was held in July 1972 in Singapore. After ten years of existence, it now time to review what we have done and to look ahead what we should do in the next ten years.

The difference in years between 1982 and 1972 as far as the Society is concerned is a "large number". The changes in the mathematical scene in the region are great and significant. We have come a long way from not knowing each other and working together. The Society is growing and is growing rapidly.

SEAMS and ICMI in Asia

The aim of the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction (ICMI) is the development of mathematics education worldwide. Among the ICMI-related activities in Asia are the SEACME (Southeast Asian Conference on Mathematics Education), and later, the EARCOME (East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education). SEAMS facilitated the exchanges among mathematicians in the region during the 70s-90s, which led to the holding of these regular conferences on mathematics education.
